A Kid Like Emmett by Jennifer Schulz
Oh, wow, this Newsweek essay was a heartbreaker. Writer Jennifer Schulz has a child with multiple, serious food allergies who’s just starting to realize that he’s not like other kids. We count our blessings that a food allergy is our child’s biggest health condition, because there are many, many worse things out there. But no getting around it, it’s very hard, particularly when they’re younger, for them to stand there and watch as their friends and classmates are all sharing snacks with each other or gobbling up yummy cookies. They have no idea why they’re the only one standing apart, but they are aware enough to know it doesn’t feel good. I’m hoping Emmett outgrows each and every one of his allergies!
