7 Ways to Talk About Food Allergies
In 7 Ways to Talk About Food Allergies, writer Johanna Bond talks about what she’s learned since being diagnosed with adult-onset food allergies. Bond’s advice, aimed at adults, is good for any age.
Our nine year old is great in many ways about managing her food allergies. In particular, she doesn’t stuff something in to her mouth without making sure that the ingredients are safe for her.
Where she needs to build skills is being assertive and advocating for herself. She is shy in talking about her allergies and would prefer to skip a food than ask a cafeteria worker or parent she does not know well, “Does that have eggs in it?” Hopefully in time, she’ll be where Bond is–able to take care of her own health in a way that feels sane and reasonable.
