Classrooms cutting down on treats during the school day

I was pleasantly surprised to hear about a school district in Connecticut banning outside foods for parties in the classroom. It’s actually not because of allergies that I’m happy, but more that (at least in my kid’s school district) there are so. many. opportunities. for. treats. that. it’s. insane.

Don’t get me wrong, God knows I love dessert. (Mmmm key lime pine.) And my kids have dessert frequently. But there are times when it’s hard to make it through the day without there being at least two snack/treat/junky food moments before 3:00 pm. I know there’s a lot of debate on this, and certainly kids should learn how to moderate themselves, but it’s a lot to ask of anyone, kid or adult, to say “no” repeatedly to sweet, salty, treat-y stuff.

Yes to an occasional dessert. Yes to marking a birthday. (Did our parents even bring in cupcakes to the classroom when we were kids? I certainly don’t remember celebrating my birthday except at home with friends and family.) But no to the relentless onslaught of dessert on a daily basis.

I’ll be interested if other schools follow suit or if there’s a backlash to this district. Stay tuned….
